The annual Moomba Festival in Melbourne is a must on every family’s Fun-Day-Out schedule, and this year was no exception. We were so excited to be invited to participate in creating a kid-zone for the younger crowd (you know, the kids who don’t quite make the ‘You Must Be THIS Tall’ carnival ride criteria), and the response was resoundingly positive! What could be more enticing than skipping over to the Birrarung Marr side of Moomba, away from the larger crowds of the main area, for some good ol’ fashioned cubby village fun.

Our retro ticketing booth – a nod to Moomba Festival’s early years

We met with Moomba some months before to discuss our village propositions – and one cubby they really wanted to see come to life was a retro ticketing booth, a nod to the festival’s early ‘carnival’ roots – Moomba is one of Australia’s longest-running community events! The ticket booth is definitely a new fave of ours, I mean, gold curtains?? If only we could have gold curtains in every room of the house! With a growing family of cubbies already (a post office, fire station, milk bar, farmer’s market, café, and every parent’s fave, the jail) we added a few newbies to the collection to round out the colourful ensemble: an emerald green bakery, and a bright pink lolly shop brought the 50’s kitsch factor to the table.

Lollipop, lollipop, ohhh lolly lolly pop – now you TOO have this song stuck in your head

With face-painting and giant puppets occupying the same territory, it was a welcome respite for the younger children away from all the bustle and ‘big kid’ activities – and it’s no surprise that cubby selfies were popular with the adults too. Have a gander at our gallery below, and see if you can spot anyone you know. Were YOU at Moomba? Let us know if you found us and enjoyed our space!
