Simone Haag’s Cubby House

We have been huuuge fans of Simone Haag’s work ever since discovering her via a Design Files feature on her GORGEOUS Ringwood home. Being not far from our own house, it certainly gave us some street cred for living in the ‘burbs! After a couple of years of internet-stalking/swooning, the opportunity came up to build a cubby for Simone and Rhys’s two girls, Goldie and Clover, at their Phillip Island holiday home. We shrugged, and said “sure, why not” (if ‘shrugged’ means ‘jumped at the chance’ and “sure, why not” means “yes, yes, a thousand times YES!!”).

Known as the Angler’s Shack, this ’60s cottage was renovated by Simone and her husband Rhys, and my-oh-my, we got to stay for the weekend while we built and installed their cubby! The good news is, you can too (it’s up for grabs on Airbnb). There is some seriously stunning styling too, interior shots here taken by Derek Swalwell.

Drawing on the design and styling elements of the Angler’s Shack, we decided on a nautical theme (fitting for Phillip Island!), and even build the deck to match the one that Rhys installed on the main house. A black and white paint job, keeping some raw wood elements, made it the perfect matching outdoor addition. Even the bunting is somewhat inspired by their fab living room wall flag!

We stayed at the shack one wintery weekend, kept cosy by the beautiful fireplace and thoroughly entertained and inspired by the styling elements and stacks of design books and magazines. The private beach just a short walk away was a hit with our two energetic-to-say-the-least boys. Not a bad way to unwind after a few hours (hard) work! Now Goldie and Clover enjoy their cubby on weekend getaways, and lucky visitors do too – you can stay at the Angler’s Shack and see for yourselves!

Simone has shared images of the cubby on her Instagram – including this incredible shot complete with RAINBOW cameo! Enjoy our gallery below with more shots of the cubby in situ.
