Down the rabbit hole with a whimsical Alice in Wonderland cubby house

One thing we love about a cubby house is all the creativite possibilities that it unlocks. And not just for the kids. We hear from quite a few of our cubby house parents about the joy they’ve had in styling and decorating their kids’ cubby house.

Such is the case with this enchanting Alice in Wonderland-themed cubby house, styled by the very clever Jess Farthing. Jess is a lover of all things whimsical and timeless and her Instagram feed is full of country vintage styling and magical moments with her young children.

The Alice in Wonderland-theme perfectly reflects that aesthetic, calling to mind hours spent buried in an imaginary storybook world and the real magic that comes when you fall down the (creative) rabbit hole.

Her photos offer boundless inspiration for creating a magical space of your own, that will delight both children and grown-ups alike. Scroll down and get inspired with your own ideas to transform your cubby house into a wonderland.

Embrace your inner Mad Hatter

Creating styled themes allows imagination to run wild. Follow those ideas and have some fun with your cubby house – even if only for the joy of it. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns, colours and textures to bring a whimsical essence to your play space.

Search high and low for vintage finds

Vintage and secondhand stores are a great source of affordable vintage pieces to decorate your cubby house. Stack old books, display mismatched teacups and display quirky pieces for a perfectly imperfect Mad Hatter's tea party vibe.

Give old furniture new life

You can furnish your cubby house using secondhand furniture – it’s often built sturdier and you’re less likely to worry about scuffs and scratches. With a little elbow grease – some cleaning, sanding, and a fresh coat of paint – you can breathe new life into old pieces. Or leave it as it is and enjoy the mis-matched aesthetic.

Of course, you can repurpose many pieces for future themes. Teacups can become planters, vintage books can be used in various settings, and painted furniture can be easily updated for a new look.

Remember, in Wonderland, nothing is quite as it seems!

More adventures in Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland makes a whimsical theme for a birthday party or gathering of friends. With a few more ideas, you can create an afternoon of adventure.

  • Create a "Drink Me" station on a small table with different-sized labelled bottles filled with juice or cordial.
  • Play lawn croquet with lightweight plastic balls and lawn flamingos from the garden store
  • Add large mushrooms, an oversized pocket watch, or a giant teapot to create the illusion of changing sizes like Alice
  • Hide a Cheshire Cat toy have little kids search to find it – keep hiding it throughout the party for an ongoing game of “spot the cat”
  • Source giant white roses and have guests paint them using acrylic red paint.
