Looking to bring some magic Christmas to your kids’ favourite outdoor space? We’ve gathered our ideas on how to turn your wooden cubby house into a festive hideaway and create some extra special holiday memories.
The images in this article are all from our Signature Modern Cubby House photoshoot, featuring the wonderful felt toys and decor from Tara Treasures. Their beautiful, ethically made felt play pieces were the perfect complement to our modern cubby – and you can see in the photos just how much our little models LOVED playing with them.
Be inspired by the Christmas styling of our new Signature Modern Cubby House and our tips below to create a Christmas experience in your backyard.
Modern meets merry for Christmas cubby house styling
You can do as much or as little as you’d like when it comes to Christmas styling. If your aesthetic leans modern minimalist (or time is limited, because it’s THAT time of year), then go ahead and add festive flair in the form of a felt garland, twinkling (battery-operated) lights and Christmas-themed toys. Just enough to capture the spirit of the season while maintaining a modern aesthetic (and your energy!).
Weather-wise decorating
A southern hemisphere Christmas means mostly warm and sunny weather. But summer showers can wreak appear at any time. We love the use of felt cubby house Christmas decorations because they’re durable, weather-friendly and look absolutely gorgeous.
Wooden decorations and natural materials like pine cones and branches are also perfect for outdoor use. Plus, they’re sustainable and can be reused then easily returned to the earth.
Get the kids involved
The best part about decorating the cubby for Christmas? It's the perfect activity to do with your kids!
They can help choose the theme and get involved in the decorating process – whether that’s painting pine cones, adding festive toys, or hanging a wreath on the front door. They’ll love getting to express their creative style.
Connect your Christmas cubby with the indoor decor
If your Christmas Day celebrations are going to spill out to the backyard, then one idea is to style your Christmas cubby house to match your interior decorations.
Create a visual flow between your house and cubby using similar colours or themes, and consider creating a magical pathway between the two spaces with decorations and lights (the perfect spot for Santa to park his sleigh!).
A festive feast of playful delights
A kids picnic table makes the perfect spot for a Christmas Day feast. Piled high with Christmas themed felt toys, your kids can play at carving the turkey, plating up veges, and handing out festive treats.
Decorate beyond December
Choose some decorations that can easily transition into other seasons, so you can create year-round magic memories.
Wooden bunting, ribbon and fairy lights create magic in any season. Storage tip: keep a special box for your cubby decorations, clearly labelled and stored in a dry place.
Creating Christmas traditions is what makes this time of year so special, and your cubby house can play a starring role in those memories. Keep it simple, make it fun, and most importantly, enjoy creating those precious memories together in your backyard.
Oh, and make sure to tag us in any of your Christmas cubby house photos. We can’t wait to see it!
